INTERCITY Bus connection - Greyhound

Featured Replies

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Greyhound has greatly reduced intercity bus services including to and from Ottawa. The corporate parent of Greyhound is located in Scotland and has put the intercity bus company up for sale, holding on to their school bus operations. At one time many years ago when VOYAGEUR Bus Lines provided intercity bus service to and from Ottawa, the Ottawa - Montreal route was the busiest intercity bus route in Canada, with hourly departures between 5:00 AM and midnight. At the present day, MEGA-BUS that operates double decker motor coaches is still providing intercity bus services service along Hwy 401 between Toronto and Montreal.

With Greyhound vacating the bus station at 265 Catherine Street, they could either lease terminal space from OC Transpo at one of the transit stations or move in with VIA Rail at their station on Tremblay Road. It is perhaps a forgone conclusion that ONTARIO NORTHLAND will eventually take over the Sudbury - Ottawa route. Greyhound top management rejects the business plan that involves low ticket prices offered on the biggest intercity buses available . . . the business plan of MEGA-BUS on routes that includes Montreal - Toronto. Perhaps there might be merit in Greyhound turning over the Ottawa - Montreal and Ottawa - Toronto routes to MEGA-BUS to operate double decker coaches, with smaller coaches to provide service on the Ottawa - Kingston and Ottawa - Prescott services. There might be scope for a private commuter operator to provide service on the Brockville - Prescott - Ottawa service.

Transit enthusiasts might recall that Greyhound closed down their services across Canada, west of Sudbury ON. At one time, their Calgary - Edmonton service operated several return trips daily. I have been advised that Greyhound seeks to continue providing service on the Montreal - Ottawa and Ottawa - Toronto links, from some other location in Ottawa. At the present time and in response to the COVID pandemic, MEGA-BUS still offers regular service on the Montreal - Toronto route, carrying HALF-LOAD with 1-passenger per pair of seats . . . about 40-people on board a motor coach built to carry 83-travelers. Greyhound's vehicles are designed to carry 52-passengers . . . .  and will be hard pressed to break even carrying 26-riders.
