Montreal Metro - Ligne Rose (Pink Line)

Featured Replies

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante once again announced her intentions to continue to press forward with the new Pink Line for the metro. It would stretch diagonally from Lachine , through downtown, to Montreal North. $1 million has been budgeted to launch a project office to study and help push forward this project, which was a major promise in her election campaign.

Here's the projected metro map if it was built. Of note, this Pink Line would not have any impact on the expansion of the Blue Line, already moving forward.

Here's an article in French on La Presse from October 22nd.

How many realize that a 1976 Metro plan actually envisaged a Blue Line western extension which included four additional stations west of the current Snowdon terminus through NDG, Montreal West, Ville St. Pierre and potentially even further to Lachine proper as well as a Blue Line extension from the existing St. Michel terminus with seven more stations added to eventually terminate within Montreal North? (see link below with sidebar map).

Clearly such an all-inclusive and conveniently-forgotten configuration of that unwisely-shelved 1976 Blue Line plan would be significantly less-costly than Mayor Plante's original Pink Line idea which essentially came out of nowhere prior to the recent municipal election.

In the news yesterday, Montreal has secured the Quebec provincial government's support for a portion of the Pink Line. This was done by transfering federal infrastructure money that was allocated to Montreal (the total that Montreal had received amounted to 3/4 of the total in Quebec) to be used for the Tramway in Quebec City. As a result, the government pledged their support for part of the Pink Line, to go from Downtown to Lachine.

Good news for both cities really! It is worth mentioning that the 800 million transfer to Quebec was not gonna affect in anyway the current projects in Montreal, as the total federal portion for infrastructure was close of 4 billions, even though Montreal did not (and still has not) produced projects to use the full amount.

Plante definitely managed a great negotiation throughout on this topic, but also recognized the need of Quebec in this, which definitely needs denser transit infrastructures.
